Football is the most popular sport in Libya. The national team was founded in 1962, with its first international match happening two years later in the Arab Cup championships. Participation in international matches has been hindered by suspension and bans caused by the frequent conflict in the North African nation.

The national football league is affected by several challenges besides the security situation in the country. In addition to losing coaches, the football club has had inconsistent matches at home and away, losing training and practice time.

Has Libya ever made it to the World cup?

The Libyan national soccer club has never made it to the World cup. The team lost in the most recent 2021 World Cup Qualifiers despite an impressive performance in the Group F matches. Having left the football scene 7 years ago, the Knights made a surprise come back by beating the Angolan Panthers 2 to 1.

Libya national football team, AFCON 2022 campaign

One of Libya's national football team's trophies includes the 2014 African Cup of Nations cup. The team played brilliantly and ended in the finals taking the Championship title. The national team's performance in the 2012 AFCON games was disappointing for fans and players after they were eliminated at the group stage.

The Knights made it to the 2018 Africa Cup of Nations games after winning the qualifier match against Algeria. As a result, the football team advanced to the AFCON semifinals taking the fourth position after Sudan. Following the 7 year absence, the Libya national football team failed to qualify for the AFCON 2022 championships after losing to Tunisia.
