Itumeleng was born on 20 June 1987 in Tshing, Ventersdorp, North West, to Elias and Flora Khune. His father worked as a driver at a mine in Carletonville and played amateur football as a striker.
The Kaizer Chiefs goalie has five siblings. His younger brother, Lucky, is a centre-forward who has played for several clubs, including Chippa United, Vasco Da Gama and Kaizer Chiefs.
The goalkeeper studied at New Nation, Westridge, St Barnabas, and RW Fick High School. He lost his sister in May 2021, who died in a house fire in Ventersdorp.

Surprisingly, Itumeleng did not start his football career as a goalkeeper but as a defender.
Kaizer Chiefs
The short-stopper joined the PSL club in 1999 for trials. However, he experienced chest pains in a junior game and was eventually converted to a goalie by a youth coach.
He received a promotion to the first team in 2004 but had his DStv Premiership debut against Jomo Cosmos in August 2007. Since then, Itumuleng has represented Kaizer Chiefs in several competitions in over 260 games. He is one of the few players on earth who have only played for one club in their entire career.
Bafana Bafana
The player was included in South Africa's squad in the 2008 African Nations Cup but did not play a single game as the team crashed out of the group stage. However, he made his breakthrough in 2009 when he was chosen Bafana's first-choice keeper in the FIFA Confederations Cup.
