Nigeria’s interim coach, Austine Eguavoen has revealed that the goal of the Super Eagles is to emerge victorious in Tuesday’s crucial Group D opener against the Pharaohs of Egypt at the Stade Roumde Adjia Stadium, Garoua.
Egypt are unbeaten in each of their last 16 group matches at the Africa Cup of Nations winning 12 games and drawing just 4 with their last defeat in the group phase dating back to the 2004 tournament when they lost 1-2 to Algeria.
The Pharaohs have also not lost a competitive game against Nigeria in over 32 years The Punch reports with Nigeria’s last victory coming in the second group game at the 1990 AFCON in Algeria, with fallen striker Rashidi Yekini grabbing the winner.
The Super Eagles will however be looking to put an end to both records as coach of Nigeria Austine Eguavoen has stated that the West African giants will be gunning for nothing but victory against the Pharaohs.
“We have no worries. We respect Egypt, but Nigeria is a great team, and we didn’t come here to lose. I’m not looking for personal glory, but the most important thing I’m looking for is an achievement for Nigeria.”
With the absence of key forwards Victor Osimhen, Odion Odion Ighalo and Emmanuel Dennis from the Super Eagles squad to the AFCON after making the initial 28-man roster, Eguavoen has admitted have issues selecting who will lead the Eagles attack.
“In attack, we have options but I have not decided yet.
“We have Iheanacho who is a good option for us if we want to go with a false nine or Awoniyi, Olayinka and Umar if we have to play with a striker or go direct.
