Scott McTominay was United's match hero as his solitary goal fired the Red Devils to a vital win at home.

The clash saw the Manchester side miss the services of key players including Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire, and Jadon Sancho.

However, Ralf Rangnick was still able to assemble a strong side for the clash as David de Gea started in goal alongside Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof who took charge at the heart of defence.

The hosts had a blistering start into the match, with Marcus Rashford testing the waters as early as the sixth minute who had his shot blocked by Luiz.

But that did not stop them from pressing for an opener and had their efforts rewarded two minutes later through McTominay who steered a header into the bottom right to hand his side the lead.

Villa responded by winning a corner of their own, down the right where Luke Shaw was able to head it behind to fend off the danger.

The second half of the match saw the visitors show intent to equalise and were unlucky to see Danny Ings' 50th-minute goal chalked off by VAR.

Despite creating plenty of goalscoring chances, Steven Gerrard's charges were unable to find a breakthrough as United held on to claim a win.

The Red Devils' victory earned them a date with second-tier side Middlesborough who they will face in the next round of the tournament.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Bruno Fernandes has hit back at media reports linking him with a possible January exit from Old Trafford.

Fernandes has widely been linked with a shock Old Trafford exit during the January transfer window.

Barcelona are said to be the leading contenders for the services of the Manchester United midfielder.

Reports suggest the La Liga giants have Fernandes on their transfer shortlist as an alternative to Erling Haaland.
