Some may have the impression that elite athletes are not prone to asthma. Athletes with asthma require a robust oxygen supply, especially during competitions, since the body demands more oxygen supply when involved in high-intensity activities. Therefore, symptoms like coughing and wheezing might hinder them from training and performing at their peak.

How do elite athletes manage asthma?

One renowned physician, Dr. Olin, stated,

Asthma treatment is the same for elite athletes as it is for those who play sports for recreation or to stay in shape.

He provided some steps athletes should follow up in case of an asthma diagnosis:

  1. See a board-certified allergist or pulmonologist for a complete diagnosis.
  2. Work together to develop an Asthma Action Plan that can detail steps to take before, during and after exercise and what to do if symptoms worsen.
  3. If you are diagnosed with asthma and exercise is a trigger, your allergist may prescribe an inhaled corticosteroid to take daily.
  4. Warm up 15-20 minutes before competition or exercise to constrict airways during exercise.
  5. Stay hydrated.

From the list above, you will realize that some athletes with asthma have had some of the most illustrious and successful careers even after the diagnosis. They have become role models to those who had given up on embracing their passions due to underlying conditions.
