Costa Rica's World Cup squad announcement

Their manager, Luis Fernando Suarez, announced his squad on the 10th of November 2022, being the last team to qualify for the World Cup through intercontinental playoffs after they beat New Zealand. The coach selected former Premier League stars Joel Campbell and Bryan Ruiz, among others. The coach had the following to say about his selection,

"It was very difficult [to choose the squad] because there are not only 26 players eligible to be in Qatar. We asked ourselves more questions about what we needed for the games and the current situation of each of them. [It is] a group that is focused on what it wants, has a lot of desire [and has shown] a continuous improvement since we started."

Who did not make the Costa Rica squad in 2022?

The squad has talented players, from Champions League winner Keylor Navas to Bryan Ruiz. However, Keylor Navas is doubtful as he got injured while training at Paris Saint-Germain, his club. He is a key player, and his absence may cause problems for the team.

Is Colombia going to the World Cup in 2022?

They failed to qualify for the 2022 tournament after being knocked out. Despite beating Venezuela one nil, Peru beat Paraguay to finish a point above Columbia in the standings. Their star player James Rodriguez was heartbroken by this event, saying,

"The most beautiful thing that has happened to me in my career as a footballer was attending two World Cups representing the shirt that I love the most, the yellow of my national team. Today I am in deep pain. I believe that our country has the talent and players to always be part of the World Cup. I feel sad and not only for myself, but also for my colleagues who deserve to shine and I know they have how. I don't know if [I'm] coming for the next processes, I don't know if [I'll be] here or not. What I do know is that it breaks my soul to lose, it makes me uncomfortable not being qualified and this cannot happen again."

How many countries qualified for World Cup from playoffs?

The tournament usually reserves space for 32 teams; however, not all qualify directly for the tournament, as they have to go through playoffs. In Asia, one extra spot is usually reserved for the playoffs, one sport in North and Central America, one for Oceania and another for South America. So in total, four countries qualify for the tournament through playoffs.

Costa Rica's World Cup history

Costa Rica's World Cup 2014 campaign was their best when they made it to the quarter-finals. They have never won the trophy, but that is when they came closes. The team has attended the tournament five times in 1990, 2002, 2006, 2014 and 2018, with 2018 being their latest, but they were eliminated early in the group stages without winning a game.

Costa Rica's World Cup squad has some of the tournament's most talented and hardworking players. They hope their star goalkeeper, Keylor Navas, will be available as it will give them a huge boost in their pursuit of glory. They are eager to see themselves past the 2014 milestone and lift the trophy.
