Niger Tornadoes history

Since its founding in 1977, the team has enjoyed immense support from its local government of Niger-State. But just like every other team without solid corporate support, it had its fair share of financial difficulties, which led to players complaining of unpaid salaries and bonuses.

Despite the troubles they have faced, the team has had success in the second-tier and domestic leagues. They are two-time champions of the Nigeria National League, a second division league they have won in 1996 and 2015. In 2000 they were the winners of the AITEO cup, an equivalent of England's FA cup.

However, in Nigeria's Professional Football League (NPFL), the team is not a strong contender. After avoiding relegation on almost three occasions, they were finally relegated in 2012. Through hard work, persistence, and considerable fan base support, they were promoted in 2015 after winning Nigeria's National League.
