FootballFormula 1: Red Bull Chief Opens Up on Max Verstappen's Future Teammate, Makes Surprise Lawson Claim
- The 2024 Formula 1 season is on the horizon
- Talks regarding an ideal teammate for Max Verstappen have again resurfaced
- A Red Bull Chief has hinted at a potential teammate for the Dutch champion
The upcoming 2024 Formula 1 season promises a wealth of excitement and thrilling moments, keeping fans on the edge of their seats as the unfolding drama takes centre stage.
As anticipation builds for the new season, a surprising update has emerged from a Red Bull Racing chief regarding the potential future teammate for three-time World Champion Max Verstappen.
Discussions about an ideal teammate gained traction in the latter half of the 2023 season, fueled by the less-than-satisfactory performance of current teammate Sergio Perez.
The Mexican driver failed to maintain the impressive form he exhibited at the beginning of the 2023 season, culminating in a notably poor showing at the Qatar Grand Prix, where he finished over a minute behind Verstappen, as reported by Motorsport.com.
Despite Perez's efforts to salvage his season with strong performances in the final races, rumours persist about his possible replacement at the Austrian team. Technical director Helmut Marko of the Milton-Keynes-based team has now shed light on Verstappen's potential future teammate.
Marko on Verstapen’s teammate
Responding to inquiries about the search for Verstappen's teammate, the 80-year-old Marko stated as quoted by RBR Daily:
"As things stand, he will fulfil his contract until the end of 2024, then we'll see."
However, he added, "Yes, and before that, Liam Lawson should at least drive a few more races so that we can see where his potential really lies."
Marko's comments have left many Red Bull fans puzzled, considering that all available seats for both the Austrian team and its junior team, AlphaTauri, are currently occupied.
However, given the team's history of mid-season driver changes, such as the recent switch involving Nyck de Vries, it would not be entirely surprising if Verstappen were to have a new teammate before the season concludes.
