  • Sergio Perez has struggled largely through the 2023 Formula 1 season
  • The Red Bull driver currently sits second on the F1 drivers' standings
  • A report of Red Bull handing the Mexican driver an ultimatum to save his 2024 seat has emerged

Sergio Perez's immediate future at Red Bull and in Formula 1 seems to be hanging in the balance following his recent run of poor performance.

The Mexican driver has seen his sizzling start to the 2023 season plummet since his second-place finish at the Miami Grand Prix.

Perez who has occasionally been supported by Red Bull's team Principal Christian Horner has failed to hit the heights he showed to many in recent years and could only secure a P10 finish in his last outing at the Qatar Grand Prix.

Amid the struggle the former Racing Point driver has faced, a report from Brazilian outlet ge.globo has stated that the 33-year-old has been handed an ultimatum to secure his seat with the team for the 2024 season.

Perez handed ultimatum

Perez has reportedly pushed Red Bull Racing to the limit with his poor performances. The Austrian team has informed him that he must make a final push to secure the runner-up position in the Drivers' World Championship. Failure to meet this goal will result in the end of his time with the Austrian team, with Daniel Ricciardo poised to replace him.

Despite having access to one of the most dominant cars in Formula 1 history, Perez currently finds himself in a battle to outscore Lewis Hamilton, who is just 30 points behind him in third place. This performance gap is especially significant, considering Perez's teammate, Max Verstappen, leads the championship with almost double the points of his Mexican counterpart in the same RB19 car.

However, recent speculation about Perez's potential departure from Red Bull and Formula 1 was addressed by the driver himself.

According to Sports Illustrated, Perez intends to continue competing in the sport for an additional 3-4 years. With the Austin Grand Prix on the horizon, Perez is fully aware of the need to maintain high performance, as these upcoming races may be the most pivotal of his career.

Perez opens up on mental struggle

Sports Brief in a previous report stated Red Bull's Sergio Perez has opened up on his mental struggle through the 2023 Formula 1 season.

The Mexican driver has struggled for form endlessly and had opted to seek the help of a therapist to regain his early season form.

Perez's poor run of form has put his immediate future at the Milton-Keynes team in doubt.
