FootballFormula 1: Sergio Perez at Risk of Salary Cut After Poor Run of Results

- Sergio Perez has had an underwhelming season so far
- The Mexican driver is at risk of a salary cut following his poor run of results
Red Bull Racing have dominated the first half of the 2023 Formula 1 season with a record-breaking 12 wins from the available 12 races.
This unprecedented dominance of the Milton-Keynes team has so far been clouded by the inconsistency and uncertainty surrounding the ability of Mexican driver Sergio Perez to compete at the very top.
Despite Perez being second in the driver’s standings behind teammate and world champion Max Verstappen, many have raised doubts about his continuity at the Austrian team.
Perez has so far reacted calmly to these talks, but his general contract situation may soon give him reason to worry, judging by the latest reports emanating from Planet F1.
Perez’s contract situation
With Formula 1 on a mid-season break, the contract signed by the Red Bull driver in 2022 has been put under scrutiny. There is speculation that the contract allows the Mexican to be swapped from Red Bull to AlphaTauri as is often the case with Red Bull drivers.
Though the talks of a potential switch have been proven as incorrect, another contract detail has reportedly been revealed which could affect Perez’s wallet more than his race seat.
According to information from De Telegraaf, a stipulation exists in Perez's contract which specifies that if he finishes behind his teammate Verstappen by 125 points or more, Red Bull holds the authority to revise his multi-million-dollar agreement.
Currently, Perez's contract stands at approximately €7 million, with an additional bonus of €3 million. He is currently 125 points adrift from Verstappen as they enter the second half of the 2023 season.

Sergio Perez reveals season ambition

Speaking to Sky Sports at Parc Ferme, Perez made clear what his new ambition is after overcoming his recent struggles.
The Mexican driver, as quoted by Motorsportweek, said:
“I really look forward to not leaving the podium anymore from now until the end of the year.
“It’s been a bit of a rough patch, but I think we overcome and we managed to score great points for the team.”
