  • China's Zhilei Zhang knocked out Deontay Wilder in the fifth round of the heavyweight bout primed to be a bounce back for either fighter
  • Wilder was sent flying to the canvas after being caught off guard with two strong blows to the face by his opponent
  • Wilder tried to make the count but was waved off by the referee, probably seeing that the former heavyweight champion was not fit to continue

Deontay Wilder was floored and defeated by a stunning knockout from Zhilei Zhang in a dramatic clash in Saudi Arabia.

This crucial bout, potentially signalling the end of the line for the American boxer, culminated in the fifth round when Zhang delivered a powerful left hand that sent Wilder crashing to the canvas.

The ex-WBC champion's head hit the mat with brutal force, leaving him dazed and facing a monumental challenge to regain his footing, per Sky Sports.

Despite his desperate efforts to rise, Wilder couldn't beat the count, resulting in a decisive and devastating stoppage that may mark the end of his illustrious career.

Promoter Eddie Hearn was left red-faced as Frank Warren's fighters achieved a clean sweep, culminating in an 8-0 tournament score.

Any hopes for a future bout with Anthony Joshua seem dashed, and retirement looms for the once-feared knockout artist.

In Riyadh, the stakes were immense for these power-punching giants, both eager to rebound from their previous defeats to Joseph Parker with a strong performance.

How Zhang defeated Wilder

According to TalkSPORT, the fight began cautiously, but Wilder soon lined up his signature right hand, poised to deliver a knockout blow.

In the second round, Zhang seemed to hurt Wilder as he pushed him into the corner, though Wilder responded with some powerful counters.

Zhang kept up the pressure while the ‘Bronze Bomber’ hesitated to unleash his usual barrage of punches. Wilder attempted to ramp up his offence in the fourth and fifth rounds, but his approach remained cautious.

In a surprising twist, Zhang floored Wilder with a powerful shot, and Wilder couldn't recover from the knockdown. The match ended dramatically with Wilder flat on his back, unable to beat the count.

Joshua ready for Wilder

Sports Brief earlier reported that Anthony Joshua was in high spirits after finishing off his last opponent with a brutal knockout punch and wasted no time calling out his next one, a household name.

Joshua delivered a vicious blow to knock Robert Helenius out in the seventh round. However, it appeared he intentionally prolonged the fight, having had opportunities in the fifth and sixth rounds of their encounter at the 02 Arena in London.

The victory over Helenius puts the Nigerian in good spirits ahead of the fight against Deontay.
