He stated that boxing kept him going while growing up in the Ajegunle area of Lagos, saying he engaged himself in the sport to avoid other social vices.
Speaking on his Instagram Live, Showkey told Sports Brief:
"I was 9 years old when I started amateur boxing. I started boxing in 1979. I understand boxing like I understand music. Soon, I will be 54; I have to keep myself fit.
"I don't know how to play football. I did Taekwondo, Shotokai, and Judo, and I was an acrobat. I did Yoga.
"It was boxing that prevented me from going to jail. It was boxing that made me stay away from crime. I didn't fight boxing on the streets. I go for competitions at the time. I went to Alakoro in Lagos.
"Boxing is my game. I have been performing on stage since 1976, and in 2 years time, I will be celebrating my 50-year on stage. I am not a roadside boxer."
