Floyd Mayweather’s visit to Zimbabwe has been greeted with mixed feelings among the locals as some are enraged about the money spent to host the boxing icon.
Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa's closest ally, gold magnate Scott Sakupwanya, who is looking to reclaim a parliamentary seat from the opposition, said he had invited Mayweather.
According to Reuters, Mayweather attended a political campaign event on Thursday, part of the Zimbabwean ruling party's attempts to woo youth voters ahead of a general election next month.
The former boxing champion wowed the audience with a public workout that featured punching and jumping rope. He also saw three boxing contests featuring Zimbabwe's rising stars.
The Zimbabwean government allegedly spent a whopping $ 5 million to bring the renowned boxer to the country, and that has sparked outrage among the locals.
Zimbabweans react to Mayweather’s coming
Some Zimbabweans are not delighted with Floyd Mayweather’s visit to their country and have criticised the government for not getting their priorities right.
Taking to social media, Zimbabweans claimed the government should have instead built infrastructure like hospitals and good roads rather than bringing the boxer.

Mayweather, who was invited to Zimbabwe by prominent businessman and boxing enthusiast Scott Sakupwanya arrived in his private jet worth a whopping $ 50 million.
The 46-year-old boxing legend was also greeted with a fleet of luxury cars at the Harare airport as he received a rousing welcome to the African country by the Zimbabwean populace.
