"It is a great honour for me to be recognised in the place that saw me grow up and made me the person I am today. Thanks to the government of Juanacatlan for this recognition and to all the people who attended. I feel very proud,” his post was translated as saying.
As noted by Marca, the statue was made by artist Sigifredo Islas and took a couple of months to create. The two-and-a-half-metre statue is made of bronze with a base of quarry and silver.
In addition to the statue, the Mayor of Juanacatlan also granted Alvarez the status of 'distinguished son' and gave him a recognition called the Cross of the Foundation of the Municipality.
Canelo’s impressive career
As noted by Martialbot, Alvarez has fought 62 times, winning 58 fights, losing two and drawing two. 39 of his wins came via knockout and he has never lost due to a KO.
He is also the first and only boxer in history to become an undisputed champion at the super middleweight division.
A likeness to Rocky Marciano
Canelo’s statue has been likened to that of Rocco Francis Marchegiano, better known as Rocky Marciano.
The former heavyweight champion’s statue was unveiled in Brockton, Massachusetts in 2012, CBSNews reported. The statue is 20 feet tall and was the world's largest statue of an athlete at the time it was erected.

Alvarez vs Messi: what happened?
Alvarez launched a scathing attack on Messi via social media, after the Paris Saint-Germain star was spotted in a video 'stepping' on a Mexican jersey and 'kicking it' away as he sat down.
The champion Mexican boxer was incensed with the apparent disrespect and expressed fury, saying Messi should hope they never meet in person.
Alvarez later apologised to the veteran striker and to Argentinians for his tirade, admitting he had overreacted.
