But this time around, the multiple world boxing champion seems to have reacted differently and is approving the quality of the Argentine genius following his performance against Croatia.

Canelo is now a Messi fan

Lionel Messi produced an incredible assist in his side's 3-0 defeat of Croatia on Tuesday evening.

While it was Julian Alvarez that got on the score sheet for Argentina's third, the goal was largely down to the brilliance of Messi.

The 35-year-old picked up the ball just past the half-way line and took on Josko Gvardiol, one of the best young defenders in world football.

The Argentine phenomenon made his way into the box, got to the byline after turning Gvardiol, and then pulled the ball back to Alvarez who could not miss.

An Argentine journalist recorded Messi's move, uploaded it on Twitter and tagged Canelo, who responded to the post with three fire emojis and a hand of approval.

Alvarez vs Messi: what happened?

The Paris Saint-Germain star was spotted in a video posted by teammate Nicholas Otamendi in the dressing room unknowingly 'stepping' on a Mexican jersey and appeared to brush it off his foot as he sat down.

Alvarez then launched a scathing attack on Messi on social media, threatening him and saying he hopes he doesn't meet the Argentina captain.

The boxing star later apologised to Messi and Argentinians for his actions, saying he had overreacted.

Aguero slams Canelo

Sports Brief had earlier reported that the spat between Lionel Messi and Santos Canelo Alvarez is gaining quick traction, with Sergio Aguero becoming the latest to jump into the feud.

Alvarez was angry after a video showed Messi stepping on a Mexican shirt after Argentina's game against Mexico on November 26 at the Lusail Stadium.

Retired striker and close friend to Messi, Aguero hit back at Canelo's threats by giving insights into what goes on in a dressing room.
