Baseball positions and roles
There are nine main baseball positions, and they are annotated by number. Each team gets nine players who win by recording the most runs, but a tenth player can be included. Here are the baseball positions explained:
1. Pitcher
The pitcher is always on the pitching mound near the centre of the field. The player in the position is the one who starts every play by pitching the ball to the catcher in hopes of preventing the batter from getting to the base. One foot of the pitcher must be touching the top of the pitching mound.
The player in the position can throw the ball inside the strike zone and also according to the opponent's weaknesses. Some types of pitching include 4-seam fastball, 2-seam fastball, Curveball, Slider and Change-up. Left-handed pitches usually have an advantage over their right-handed counterparts.
2. Catcher
The position comes on top when baseball positions are ranked by difficulty. The player stays behind the home plate and remains in the only position to share the pitch view with the batter. The position has both offensive and defensive attributes.
The primary role is to receive throws from the pitcher defensively. Offensively, the players are supposed to prevent the base runners from stealing a base. A catcher must be intelligent and have leadership qualities to control the game.
3. First baseman
Located a few steps from the base and the air territory, the first baseman covers massive space to field ground balls. They also cover the first base in the action. They are the most active players on the pitch.

4. Second baseman
They are also known as middle infielders, as they are between the first and second base. The baseman adjusts his position according to the hand the hitter uses to avoid ground balls the best. They are involved in many gameplays, and agility may come in handy.
The players in this position must cover a lot of ground, get force-outs and be good with their hands. Most coaches prefer right-handed second basemen.
5. Third baseman
What is position 5 in baseball? Also known as the "hot corner", the third baseman must be keen and react quickly. Players stand a few feet from third base and the fair territory. The position of the third baseman is conditional depending on the hand the hitter uses; hence a right-handed one prompts them to stay closer to the foul line.

6. Shortstop
The shortstop's primary role is to ensure the batters are retired once the ball is hit toward the second and third baseman. They are closer to the second base and are referred to as the infield's anchors. The players in the position are also relay men between the infield and the left half of the outfield.
To be a shortstop, one should have incredible arm strength and agility to dive and get up in time while accurately throwing the ball. Most players are right-handed and in the only position to be great fielders and power hitters. Can a catcher throw to shortstop? The player throws straight to the shortstop without looking at the third base.
7. Left fielder
They are mainly located in the fairy territory in the outfield corner. They are also the fielders with the weakest arm, as they rarely make any throws to the first base. However, they are well known to be power hitters regarding offence hence their position in the middle spot of the batting order.

The players are responsible for all balls going towards the centre area of the outfield. They have the priority of catching a ball when in competition with a teammate; hence they should have a strong arm. Their prominent roles include returning the ball to the infield and throwing out runners.
9. Right fielder
They are in the corner outfield position where the least balls are hit as there are more right-handed hitters. The players need a strong arm for throwing and speed for covering ground to return the ball to the infield players. They can also turn a single into a double.
