Faith Kipyegon to Battle Sha’Carri Richardson, Others for Laureus Sportswoman of the Year Award

Faith Kipyegon has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award following a sensational 2023 season.

The Kenyan track superstar will compete with other track stars, including world champions Sha'Carri Richardson and Shericka Jackson.

Other nominees for the award are Barcelona's Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati, French Open champion Iga Światek, and alpine skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin, per Laureus.

Bonmati helped Barcelona win the league and Champions League last season and lift the World Cup with Spain.

Shericka Jackson won the women's 200m gold and 100m silver at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Richardson also had a breakout 2023 season. She defeated Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Jackson, to win the women's 100m world title.

The winners will be announced on April 22.

Faith Kipyegon's superb year

2023 was a historic year for Faith Kipyegon. From May to October, she produced record-breaking performances across the world.

Her Diamond League season began in Doha, Qatar, on May 5, where she won the women's 1,500m. Her next 1,500m race was at the Golden Gala in Rome/Florence on June 2. The double Olympic champion clocked a world record 3:49.11.

On June 9 in Paris, the 30-year-old shattered the 5,000m world record, clocking 14:05.20, to beat world record holder Letesenbet Gidey.

On July 21, she smashed the one-mile world record in the Monaco Diamond, finishing in 4:07.64.

The Kenyan superstar then won the 1,500m in the Diamond League final on September 16. Kipyegon also won two gold medals in the 1,500m and 5,000m at the World Athletics Championships.

What Kipyegon earned for gold medals

Sports Brief previously reported on what Kipyegon earned for her gold medals at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

She won two gold medals and will be entitled to $140,000. When converted to Kenyan shillings, she will make over Ksh20 million (1USD=145Ksh).

Kipyegon also took home $40,000 after her dominant win in the Diamond League final.
