In a significant move towards the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympics, Kenya is poised to unveil its Para-athletics team in three weeks.
The Kenya National Paralympic Committee (KNPC) has announced the staging of national trials scheduled from January 18 to 20, at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
During the three-day national trials, athletes will compete across various Paralympic events, looking to secure coveted spots for the 2024 Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 28.
Additionally, the KNPC stated the national trials would determine teams representing Kenya at the Tunis Games in March and the Kobe Japan World Championships in May.
Stanley Mutuma, the Kenya Paralympic Committee Secretary-General, stressed that all Para-athletics track and field disciplines would be featured in the national trials.
"The national trial [are] to select Para-athletes who shall represent Team Kenya in subsequent national, regional, and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) events..." Mutuma said as quoted by Standard Sports.
Participants in the national event will include self-sponsored athletes and county teams.
Notably, Para-athletes aspiring to participate in regional and international competitions will bear the cost of their own sponsorship.
Eldoret prepared for Kenyan national trials
Joseph Ochieng, who leads the Local Organising Committee in Uasin Gishu, affirmed Eldoret's readiness to host the national trials.
In November last year, 39 athletes were selected after the two-day trials, which brought together over 300 athletes at the Kiprugut Chumo Stadium in Kericho County.
World Paralympics 1,500 metres champion Nancy Chelangat, hailing from Kalyet village in Kipkelion East constituency, was among the star names picked.
