  • Kegogi FC have exited the Cleo Malalah Super Cup in outstanding fashion
  • The team from Kisii County shipped in 31 goals in only three matches
  • The tournament features 38 teams competing for a Ksh3 million prize

In a surprising turn of events at the annual Malalah Super Cup, Kisii's Kegogi FC has become the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons.

The team, invited to the tournament featuring participants from Western Kenya counties, experienced a dismal outing at the group stage, suffering heavy defeats in all three matches.

Defeats were not the problem, but their extent.

In a tournament that kicked off on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, the team conceded over 30 goals in only three games, as reported on Pulse Sports.

The team’s woes began with an 11-0 thrashing by Compel FC in their opening match, followed by a 9-0 loss to Galacticos FC.

Any hopes of redeeming themselves were shattered as they succumbed to yet another 11-0 defeat, this time at the hands of Malaba Giants FC from Teso North Constituency.

The team's humiliating performance has turned them into the tournament's laughingstock, especially considering their invitation was based on their epic victory at a previous Sakata Dimba tournament.

Kegogi was one of eight guest teams invited to the competition, alongside Githunguri All Stars from Nairobi County, Suba United from Homa Bay County, Pokot FC from West Pokot County, Turkana FC from Turkana County, Luminous FC from Kericho County, Ptikii FC from Baringo County and Iten FC from Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Matches take place in eight venues in Mumias. These include Booker Academy, Mumias Sports Complex, Complex Primary School ground and the Central Primary School. The Mumias Complex has opted to even host games under floodlights.

The five-day event features teams from 38 constituencies divided into 10 pools, all competing for the coveted Ksh3 million cash prize.

“From what we are witnessing from the fields, teams did not come to Mumias to play, they came to exhibit talent and skills and to win,” the tournament patron, former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malalah, is quoted on Nation.

Kenya lacks creative players

Sports Brief reported when Harambee Stars Head Coach Engin Firat lamented his team's lack of creative players.

This followed the damaging defeat to South Sudan on Tuesday, September 12.

The national football team went down to Africa's youngest nation by a solitary goal in front of a well-attended game at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
