The 24-year-old made his marathon debut in December 2022 in Valencia, Spain, and clocked a stunning 2:01:53 to win. It was the second-fastest time before he set a new record, per World Athletics.

In October, he competed in his second marathon, the Chicago Marathon. He clocked a world record 2:00:35, taking 34 seconds off the world record and becoming the first man to run the marathon under 2:01. He broke the world record set by his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge.

American sprinter Noah Lyles won the award for track events.

He won three gold medals at the 2023 World Athletics Championships and won three Diamond League races, one in the 100m and two in the 200m.

Meanwhile, Swedish pole vault star Mondo Duplantis improved his indoor and outdoor world records and added another world title. He took home the award for field events. Duplantis has won the Men's World Athlete of the Year award twice before.

He won five Diamond League races in 2023 and set a new world record of 6.23m in the final in Eugene, USA.

American shot putter Ryan Crouser won another world title and set a new world record. India's javelin star Neeraj Chopra won the world and Asian titles this year. These two were the other finalists for the men's award.
