Ferdinand Omanyala and Faith Kipyegon will lead Team Kenya to the World Athletics Championships after securing their spots at the two-day national trials at Nyayo National Stadium.

Double world record holder Kipyegon punched her ticket in the 5,000 metres on Friday afternoon with a dominant victory as she aims to complete a double swoop in Budapest next month.

Kipyegon did not participate in the 1500m trials as she already had a wild card by virtue of being the defending world champion. She will now be seeking to become a triple world champion over the distance.

Omanyala meanwhile clocked 9.86 in the men's 100 metres final on Saturday to book his spot in the elite sprint race. The fastest man on the continent was contented with another sub-10 performance.

Omanyala's likeliest opponents

In Budapest, Omanyala will come up against fellow world-beaters like the reigning champion Fred Kerley, 2019 champion Christian Coleman and 200m champion Noah Lyles.

Emmanuel Korir made the team despite not being present at the trials. He is the reigning 800m world champion, plus the Diamond League champion. An athlete gets a free pass to the Championships if he has either.

Korir is currently nursing injury as he battles with a poor start to the season. He should, however, be ready for the August showpiece.
