Mental assessment before taking plea

Rotich was arraigned before Magistrate Charles Kutwa, where the prosecution sought more time to detain him.

The court directed that the accused be detained at Railways Police Station in Eldoret.

He will also undergo a mental assessment at Eldoret Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The case will be mentioned on November 9.

Tirop was found dead on the morning of Wednesday, October 13, with grave stab wounds on her neck and abdomen in her house in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Her husband, who had gone missing after the incident, would later on the night of Thursday, October 14, be arrested in Changamwe, Mombasa.

On Sunday, October 17, Kalenjin elders from Tirop's lover's family made their way into her home, where a cloud of sadness had heavily hovered over the homestead as it struggling to come to terms with her death.

"I say we are sorry and we have agreed as the elders from Kipkendet and arap tego clans to ask for forgiveness from this family, and to athletics Kenya and to all those touched by this incident, we are so sorry," one elder said.

They said they did not expect that things could take such an ugly turn, further adding they are ready to support the bereaved family in every way possible.
