World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge has spoken for the first time since he lost the Boston Marathon on April 17. Kipchoge shockingly finished in sixth place in a race where he was expected to dominate and win.

It was an off day for the 38-year-old, who, despite leading the race until past the 1 hour 20 minutes mark, fell off the pace of the leading group to lose his first marathon since October 2020.

This became the third marathon he has lost in his entire career and the second that he hasn't finished in the top two places. Evans Chebet capitalised to retain his title, with Tanzanian Gabriel Gaey coming in second. 2021 winner Benson Kipruto finished in third.

Kipchoge speaks

Kipchoge took to his social media accounts to try and make meaning of what happened in his first-ever marathon in Boston. The father of three was angling to win his fifth marathon major, but it wasn't meant to be.

I live for the moments where I get to challenge the limits. It’s never guaranteed, it’s never easy. Today was a tough day for me. I pushed myself as hard as I could but sometimes, we must accept that today wasn’t the day to push the barrier to a greater height.

He also congratulated his compatriots who won the race. Hellen Obiri won the women's race in only her second-ever marathon.

"I want to congratulate my competitors and thank everyone in Boston and from home for the incredible support I am so humbled to receive. In sports you win and you lose and there is always tomorrow to set a new challenge. Excited for what’s ahead."

Kipchoge will now turn his attention to the New York Marathon on November 5th later this year. The Boston Marathon and New York Marathon remain the only majors that the record holder is yet to win. Coincidentally, he will be turning 39 years on the day of the New York marathon.

How Kipchoge lost

Sports Brief earlier reported that Eliud Kipchoge failed in his pursuit to become the first man to win five different marathon majors as he finished sixth at the Boston Marathon.

The race was won by Evans Chebet, who successfully retained the title he won last year with a time of 2:05:34. Tanzanian Gabriel Gaey came in second, with another Kenyan, Benson Kipruto finishing third.

It was Kipchoge's first-ever race in Boston after winning four of the six major marathon majors in his career.
