Buhari, Atiku Congratulate Tobi Amusan After Smashing World Record in Women’s 100m Hurdles

President Muhammadu Buhari and former vice-president Atiku Abubakar have lauded Tobi Amusan’s feat at the World’s Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States.

The Nigerian sprinter smashed her personal best to set a new world record in the Women’s 100m Hurdles following her incredible performance.

The 25-year-old bettered her own record when she came first in the final, having crossed the line in 12.05 seconds to win gold at the event.

Earlier in the day, Amusan won her semifinal heat when she crossed the finished line at a time of 12.12 seconds, smashing the previous best of 12.20sec set by American Kendra Harrison in 2016.

And President Muhammadu Buhari has taken to social media to congratulate the gold medalist, expressing excitement.

He tweeted:

“I join millions of Nigerians in celebrating Tobi Amusan and her stellar performance, at the World Athletics Championships 2022. Her new World Record and Gold Medal have brought excitement and joy and hope to all of us, and made our national anthem resonate on a global stage.”

Also, Atiku Abubakar a former vice-president and flag bearer of the Peoples’ Democratic Party for the February 2023 general elections, disclosed that Amusan’s feat underscores his plan to invest in sports.

He wrote:

“All hail Nigeria's Tobi Amusan, the record-breaking women's 100m hurdles champion. I am particularly proud of this feat, and it underscores my plan to refocus investments in sports, and creative sectors, amongst others.”

Atiku’s special assistant on new media, Eta Uso, added that the sprinter's achievement is one of raw tenacity.

He added:

“Tobi Amusan’s victory is one of raw tenacity. She took many disappointments to get here - this represents the spirit of the true Nigerian who strives against all odds.”

Ese Brume wins silver at World Athletics Championships

Sports Brief earlier reported that Nigeria’s Ese Brume will return home with a medal after winning silver on the last day of the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States.

Brume leapt 7.02m to finish second in the women’s long jump despite that she barely made it into the final with her last attempt to book an automatic qualification spot.

The 26-year-old came second behind Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo of Germany, who leapt 7.12m.
