  • Conseslus Kipruto failed in his pursuit to retain his World title as the 3000 metres steeplechase crown headed to Morocco
  • Kipruto finished third behind Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali and Ethiopia's Lamecha Girma
  • It is the first time since 2007 that a non-Kenyan has won the 3000 metres steeplechase title

Kenya's poor start to the World Athletics Championships continued with Conseslus Kioruto failing to defend his 3000 metres steeplechase world title.

Kipruto had to settle for bronze in a race won by Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali. El Bakkali became the first non-Kenyan to hold both the Olympic and World title at the same time.

Kipruto was hoping to retain a title he won in 2019, but it wasn't meant to be after Bakkali displayed some tactical masterclass to storm to victory in Oregon. The Kenyan led for most parts of the race, but with one lap to go, El Bakkali injected the required pace to cross the finishing line first.

El Bakkali used a time of 8:25.13 while Kipruto finished with 8:27.92.

Ethiopia's Lamecha Girma finished second and once again had to play second fiddle to El Bakkali after also finishing second at the Tokyo Olympics.

The last time a person who was not a Kenyan won Gold at the World Championships was Saif Saeed Shaheen at the Helsinki Games in 2005. El Bakkali sent yet another warning statement that Kenya was losing its grasp in a discipline it has dominated for far too long.

Near miss for Kenya as Judith Korir finishes second in the women's marathon

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Kenya's search for her first gold medal at the World Athletics Championships is set to continue after Judith Korir narrowly missed out in the women's marathon.

Korir was beaten by Ethiopia's Gotytom Gebreslase, who set a championship record to become the new champion. Kenyan-born turned Israeli national Lonah Salpeter won bronze.

Making her debut officially for Team Kenya, Korir, who is the reigning Paris and Abu Dhabi Marathon champion, took the mantle from the defending champion Ruth Chepngetich who pulled out of the race after just 18 kilometres.
