Hellen Obiri's biography

She had her first international experience at the Rio de Janeiro 2011 Military World Games, where she won the bronze medal in the 800 metres and finished fourth in the 1500 metres.

In 2012, she won her first global title, running an 8:37.16 over the 3000 metres at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul.

She took silver in the 3000m at the World Indoor Championships in Poland a year after winning bronze in the 1500m in the 2013 World Championships in Moscow.

She finished second only to Genzebe Dibaba, a multiple world record holder. She added a 1500m championship from the African Championships in 2014. Obiri competed in the 5000 metres at the 2016 Rio Olympics, finishing second in a time of 14:29.77, behind compatriot Vivian Cheruiyot, who set an Olympic record with a time of 14:26.17, and ahead of Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana, who ran 14:33.59.

She represented Kenya in the 2017 World Championships in London, winning the 5000m gold medal ahead of Almaz Ayana and Sifan Hassan. She represented Kenya at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in both the women's 5000m and 10,000 metres events.
