Itumeleng Khune: Former Kaizer Chiefs Star Junior Khanye Says Amakhosi Disrespected Club Legend

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has expressed disappointment at the Amakhosi's apparent 'disrespect' for club legend Itumeleng Khune.

The PSL giants announced that they would honour the iconic goalkeeper, who had spent 25 years with the club after joining them as a young talent.

Despite the game appearing to be Khune's final home match, the Chiefs technical crew under Cavin Johnson instead started Bruce Bvuma in goal.

In what could be described as an empty FNB Stadium, with only a few fans present, Khune was only substituted on for the final 15 minutes of the game.

South African football fans had expected the 36-year-old to start in goal, considering the occasion, with Khanye upset with the technical crew.

He said, as per iDiski TV:

"I’m very disappointed by Kaizer Chiefs technical team. I need to be honest, Itumeleng Khune has done well for Kaizer Chiefs. This is not how you honour your legend, I mean fans had to intervene. We are talking about one of the best goalkeepers the country has ever produced in history."

Khanye also commented on Khune's status in local football, commenting that he did not understand why 'South Africa was making him retire'.

"When I speak specifically about Chiefs, I don’t understand how he was in the 18-man squad and started on the bench, and he only comes on after fans are shouting."

The game against Polokwane City ended in a 1-1 draw, as Chiefs continued to struggle in the DStv Premiership and currently sit eighth on the log, missing out on continental football next season.

Although there are no signs that Khune is retiring, it remains unclear where the Bafana Bafana legend will play next although Naturena seems unlikely.

Cavin Johnson gives excuses for Chiefs fans

Sports Brief earlier reported that interim coach, Cavin Johnson gave possible excuses for supporters' failure to turn up to honour a departing legend, Khune.

Chiefs are currently eighth in the league standings, and fans seem to be showing their displeasure by continuing to vote with poor attendance at matches.

Johnson said fans stayed away from the occasion because they had many commitments, especially with the South African general elections on May 29.
