Kaizer Chiefs interim coach, Cavin Johnson, has given possible excuses on why the club supporters failed to turn up in honour of their departing legend, Itumeleng Khune.

Amakhosi had announced that the club will use the penultimate 2023/2024 league match at the FNB Stadium to celebrate Khune's 25 years at the club.

Only a few fans turned up for the occasion as the team produced yet another disappointing performance in the DStv Premiership, drawing 1-1 with Polokwane City.

Chiefs are eighth on the league standings, and fans seem to be showing their displeasure and have continued to vote with their poor attendance of matches.

Kaizer Chiefs have now gone nine seasons without silverware, but many expected youth product Khune who won nine trophies with the club in his first 11 years to be properly celebrated.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper replaced Bruce Bvuma for the final 15 minutes, though clarity is yet to be given on his future at Amakhosi.

However, according to Johnson, fans stayed away from the big occasion because they had too many commitments, especially due to the upcoming elections scheduled for May 29.

Johnson said, via iDiski Times:

“I think when you look back and you look at what we've been doing, I think we're still one of the teams in the PSL with the most supporters in any one game.

“But you look back and you look at what's happening around the country, there's a lot, [there's] elections.

“People are saying, 'Hey let me go and [vote] so that I can get Sassa [government grant] money, or let me go here to see what they are doing. Are they going to burn or fix our roads?"

Khune pays tribute to Amakhosi fans

Sports Brief earlier reported that the Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper, Khune, sent a heartfelt message to the club's loyal supporters after being honoured for his 25 years of service.

He stressed that the fans' presence and encouragement at the stadiums push the players to achieve the desired results.

However, the loyal Glamour Boy was disappointed that the team has been unable to consistently deliver victories, especially at home, which is the standard expected of the club.
