Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Rhulani Mokwena has defended Bongani Zungu following the potentially career-ending tackle on Bernard Parker.
There was drama in the 58th minute of the Carling Knockout Cup clash between Sundowns and TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium on Wednesday night.
Parker was rushed to the hospital after his leg appeared to be fractured following a nasty tackle from Zungu, who was immediately shown a red card.
The highly entertaining fixture ended 2-2 at the end of regulation time, with TS Galaxy winning the tie 5-4 after a thrilling penalty shootout.
This came barely a week after Mokwena’s side lost the MTN8 final to Orlando Pirates.
Sundowns still have the African Football League, the Premier Soccer League, the CAF Champions League, and the Nedbank Cup trophies to fight for, GOAL reports.
Mokwena defends Zungu after horror tackle
In his reaction to the incident involving Zungu and Parker, Mokwena defended his player, saying there was no malicious intent.
However, he did send his best wishes to the striker, who is now recuperating in hospital.
"I hope it is not as serious as it looks. Knowing Bongani, it was not malicious and [there] was no malicious intent behind it. The only thing I can say is that I wish Bernard Parker a speedy recovery."
Fans are worried the aftermath of the tackle could mark the end of the 37-year-old’s professional career.
