Fernandes was twice on target for the Selecao, as they battled Uruguay in their second Group H clash played at the Lusail Stadium.
Portugal secured a 3-2 vital win in their World Cup opener against Ghana on November 24.
Therefore, the side needed another three points against Uruguay to seal a spot in the knockout round of the global football showpiece.

Fernandes stepped up for Portugal when they needed him most, breaking the deadlock in the 54th minute.
Incidentally, this was the Man United star's first World Cup goal for the 2016 Euro champions.
The ex-Sporting Lisbon ace went on to grab a brace in the dying minutes of the encounter, as he fired home Portugal's second from the penalty spot.
Fernandes' double was enough to send Portugal to the last 16, with the European football giants currently topping the pool with six points.
Ghana are second, with three points picked up in their 3-2 epic win over South Korea, while Uruguay are bottom of the pool with just a point.
Portugal will play the Tigers of Asia in their final group-stage match on Friday, December 2.
