World Cup 2022: Canada Becomes Second Nation to Suffer Elimination After Hosts Qatar

Canada became the second nation to crash out of this year's edition of the FIFA World Cup, after hosts Qatar.

Making an appearance at the Mundial for the first time since 1986, the Maple Leafs bowed out of the competition at the group stages following two successive defeats.

The CONCACAF nation began the competition on a blistering note. Belgium however, who finished in the third position at the 2018 World Cup, weathered the storm to pip the Canucks by a lone goal.

Despite the disappointing result against the Red Devils, John Herdman's charges had the best possible start in their second group game against Croatia, scoring the fastest goal of the tournament thus far.

However, the 2018 World Cup finalists rallied from a goal down to dispatch Canada 4-1, inadvertently booting the Maple Leafs out of the competition, the Washington Post reports.

It means Canada becomes the second nation to exit the group phase of the tournament after Qatar, who also suffered back-to-back defeats in their first-ever appearance at the World Cup.

Croatia ends Canada's Mundial dreams

Croatia got their World Cup campaign back on track, as Andrej Kramaric's double inspired a 4-1 win to eliminate Canada in Sunday's Group F grudge match in Doha.

Zlatko Dalic's side were stunned by Alphonso Davies's second-minute opener at the Khalifa International Stadium.

Hoffenheim forward Kramaric equalised however, and Marko Livaja put the 2018 World Cup runners-up ahead just before half-time.

Canada's Davies scores fastest goal

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Bayern Munich superstar Alphonso Davies scored the fastest goal at the ongoing 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Davies had a chance to open his goal account at the tournament during their Group F opener against Belgium on Wednesday, November 24, when his side won a penalty.

However, the midfielder fluffed the opportunity as Canada went on to suffer a 1-0 frustrating loss to the Red Devils.
