A lot of things happened during Manchester United's 1-0 loss to Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon, April 9.

However, none was as peculiar as seeing Harry Maguire appear to appeal for a handball against his own teammate.

With Everton leading 1-0, the United skipper was seen raising his hand for an appeal against a handball by Nemanja Matic.

The bizarre incident happened in the first half of the tense clash after a header from Everton star Anthony Gordon hit Matic just under the arm-pit.

In response, Maguire raised his arm in the air and shouted in protest as he called the referee to the attention to the incident.

Meanwhile, Maguire's reaction to Matic's handball quickly became the talk of the town on social media with fans left stupefied.

One fan described the incident as "absolute comedy" with another labelling the underfire United captain as a "walking disaster."

Another said:

"Did he just call a foul on Matic? Good thing I didn’t waste my time on this game LMFAO."

A fourth fan noted:

"He's claiming a handball against his own player!"

Man United suffer top-four blow at Goodinson Park

Meanwhile, Sports Brief reported Man United went on to suffer a 1-0 frustrating defeat during their trip to Merseyside, with the loss leaving the Red Devils in danger of missing out on a top-four finish.

Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the match that separated the two sides as Everton revived their hopes of surviving the drop.

United remain seventh on the standings with 51 points after 31 rounds of matches, on level on points with sixth-placed West Ham.
