Finidi George is in the spotlight as talks surrounding his choice of assistant coaches for the Super Eagles have continued to resonate within the Nigerian footballing community.

The 53-year-old was appointed gaffer by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), albeit without the members of his backroom staff being announced.

Nonetheless, Finidi is said to have curated a shortlist of potential assistants whom he envisions working with during his tenure as coach of the Nigerian national team.

Among the names on the manager's reported shortlist are former his teammate, Abiodun Baruwa (who is poised to take on the role of goalkeeper trainer) and Daniel Amokachi, who is set to serve as his second assistant, alongside three foreign managers.

However, a recent report has surfaced indicating that members of the NFF technical committee are dissatisfied with Finidi's choice of assistants.

NFF unhappy with Finidi’s choice

According to a report from OwnGoalNigeria, a member of the NFF technical committee, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed disappointment with Finidi's choice of assistants.

The committee member emphasised that he expected the 53-year-old to build his team's core around indigenous coaches rather than foreign managers.

The report also highlighted that the committee had entrusted Finidi with the managerial role of the Super Eagles, despite widespread clamour for a foreign coach to take over.

It suggested it would have made more sense for Finidi, as a former Real Betis man, to repay this trust by appointing other indigenous managers to work closely with him as members of his backroom staff.

The report concludes by stating that the federation chief mentioned that the NFF has no plans to alter Finidi's choices, and discussions with his assistants should commence soon.

His first task as manager of the Super Eagles will be guiding the team to victory against South Africa's Bafana Bafana on June 7 as part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Finidi responds to his critics

In another report, Sports Brief stated that Nigeria's coach, Finidi, issued a promise to his critics ahead of the June international window.

The former Ipswich Town star's appointment as manager has been met with widespread scepticism across Nigeria’s footballing community.
