Sting was initially married to Sue Borden in 1985, and they had two sons, Garett Lee and Steven Jr., and a daughter, Gracie, together. After he divorced Sue in 2010, he married his second wife, Sabine, in 2015. Both his sons played college football though none of them landed an NFL roster spot.

He was popular in the promotion due to his rivalry with another wrestling superstar Ric Flair which brought in huge audiences. He joined the Total Nonstop Action(TNA) promotion in 2003 and excelled there for an 11-year spell before joining the WWE in 2014. He left the WWE in 2020 for the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) promotion, where he currently fights.
