The famous volleyball player participated in basketball and volleyball at Newport Harbour High School. Following that, he played basketball for the Orange Coast College Pirates team while attending Orange Coast College (OCC).

Steve then made his way to the University of Southern California to enrol. He began competing for the university's Trojans volleyball team, which took first place in the 1980 NCAA Men's Volleyball Tournament. Similarly, in 2003, Timmons sold Redsand, an action sports apparel and lifestyle brand he co-founded and was president of.

Steve qualified for the 1984 Olympic men's volleyball team thanks to his outstanding collegiate volleyball career at the University of Southern California. In between Olympic competitions, he played volleyball in the Italian leagues.

  • Timmons, the first male American to win three indoor volleyball Olympic medals, has been an elite coach with the Wave Volleyball Club, one of the most prestigious volleyball clubs in the nation, since 2013. The club is located in nearby Del Mar.
