Khamzat Chimaev is the new number-one contender for the UFC’s Middleweight title.
Chimaev secured the title shot with a victory over Kamaru Usman in the co-main event of UFC 294.
Chimaev started the fight off in his trademark tenacious manner, immediately going for a takedown. The undefeated fighter took Usman down with a single leg and immediately took his back.
He continued to work himself into submission and eventually took Usman’s neck, attempting to choke him out.
He hooked in a rear-naked choke while the Nigerian was on his feet, and Usman cleverly fell forward to dump the United Arab Emirates fighter on his head.
While it broke his hold of Usman’s neck, Chimaev didn’t let the body scissors go and continued to try and get the former Welterweight champion to tap out.
The Nigerian stayed resolute and survived to the end of the round.
Round 2
The second round was a far departure from the first, as both fighters kept it standing.
There wasn’t much action, as neither fighter tried too hard, and the fans even started booing the fighters at one stage. It did heat up with a minute to go when Usman landed two big jabs before Chimaev landed a takedown with 30 seconds to go.
Round 3
With the fight entering the third and final round, Chimaev went for a takedown early, trying to use his wrestling to control the round from the get-go.
The Nigerian evaded the takedown and then used his power to throw some heavy hands.
Despite taking the fight on short notice, Usman looked fresher in round three, blasting the undefeated fighter with big shots.
