Chael Sonnen believes that Israel Adesanya should fight a new opponent during his next bout.

The UFC legend has weighed in on The Last Stylebender’s future opponent and has pitched that South Africa’s Dricus du Plessis should be next in line.

Sonnen made the comments while shooting down the idea of Robert Whittaker taking on the Nigerian-born New Zealander for a third time.

Whittaker is top of the rankings to take on Adesanya next, while du Plessis is currently ranked sixth.

As reported by MMA News, Sonnen believed there needed to be a fresh contender for the title next and stated Du Plessis was good enough to take on the champ.

"Don't act like Du Plessis is a day off. Du Plessis can win that fight. Du Plessis is good. If you don't know that or understand that you need to go back, and you need to watch him. That young man Du Plessis he's ranked number six; there's an argument he should be ranked number one," he said.

Sonnen argued that Izzy needed someone new and fresh, no matter who that was, and didn’t have to constantly prove himself against the same contenders again and again.

Adesanya has beaten every contender in the top five in the division and was only beaten once.

Du Plessis is thus far unbeaten in the organisation and is looking for either a title shot next or a number-one contender fight.
