Fans are convinced that Serena Williams literally dragged Simona Halep through the mud hours after she was handed a four-year ban for doping violations.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed the punishment on Tuesday, September 12, for two separate offences, each carrying a two-year ban.

The two-time Grand Slam winner tested positive for prohibited substance Roxadustat during the 2022 U.S. Open. The other charge was irregularities in the Romanian's Athlete Biological Passport(ABP), where three independent consultants agreed that doping was the most feasible explanation, as captured on ITIA's website.

Simona Halep: My fight continues

The 31-year-old took to X and revealed that she was shocked by the decision as she pled her innocence, promising to present an appeal.

"I refuse to accept their decision of a four-year ban. I am shocked and disappointed with their decision. I continue to train and do everything in my power to clear my name. I intend to appeal this decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sports to pursue all legal remedies available," read parts of the statement.

What did Serena Williams say?

But even as she did so, Williams seemingly reacted to her situation with the American posting;

"8 is a better number."

A quick dive into Williams' illustrious career points to the fact that Halep denied her an eighth Wimbledon title at the 2019 final. Halep pulled off a surprise 6-2, 6-2 victory to beat Williams for the first time ever in a major game. The loss also denied Williams a record-equalling 24th major singles title.

The mother of two then liked a series of tweets with the word 'shade' on them, further proving the point that her initial post was targeted at Halep.

Her husband, Alexis Ohanian, also uploaded a photo of him in a D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) t-shirt with the caption, 'Some fashion is timeless,' to which Williams replied by saying, 'Seriously not out of style.'

Serena Williams welcomes second baby

The couple recently welcomed their second child.

The newborn baby, who is also a girl, has been named Adira River Ohanian by the power couple, who already have a first daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.

In a heartwarming video shared on X, the couple, alongside their 5-year-old daughter, revealed the newest addition to their family.
