Rugby World Cup: Thousand of Supporters Welcome Springboks Back to South Africa, Video

South African rugby fans have stormed the airport to give the Springboks a hero's welcome back to the country after a successful outing at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in Paris, France.

The Springboks beat New Zealand 12-11 in the final of the tournament at the Stade de France to become the first nation to win four trophies.

South Africa became the most successful nation at the Rugby World Cup after winning the tournament in Paris. Their first title came in 1995, while the second one came in 2007.

Thousands of supporters gathered at the OR Tambo International Airport in the early hours on Tuesday morning to welcome the Springboks back to the country, according to a report by eNCA.

A press conference will be conducted with head coach Jacques Nienaber, captain Siya Kolisi and selected squad members.

Bok fans want a public holiday

Meanwhile, South Africans are celebrating their victory over New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup final, becoming the first team to win the trophy four times.

While they are happy with the win, Springbok supporters are calling on the country's president to make Monday, October 30 a public holiday.

As Sports Brief reported, Ramaphosa previously joked about a public holiday being declared if the South Africans won the Webb Ellis Trophy.

Springboks victory tour announced

Sports Brief also reported on the nationwide victory parade that the Springboks will embark on.

SA Rugby issued the statement on Sunday for frenetic South African fans eager to meet their heroes. The Springboks will start their victory tour in Gauteng on Thursday before gracing the coastal cities.

Other South African fans will also get to meet their heroes this coming weekend, with the four-time champions travelling to Durban on Saturday and East London on Sunday for the conclusion of their tour.
