The performance of South Africa in the Rugby World Cup has earned the country a public holiday.
The Springboks beat New Zealand 12-11 in the final of the tournament in France to become the first nation to win four trophies.
Prior to the final, South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa teased the country would get a public holiday if they won and people were eager to hold him to his word.
In a special ‘family meeting’ on Monday night (October 30), Ramaphosa declared there would be a public holiday. He touched on how the Boks gave the country a sense of pride with their win, and so it should be honoured.
Ramaphosa also mentioned the Proteas, who are doing well in the Cricket World Cup, and Banyana Banyana’s history-making showing at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The President also touched on the great display by the national team at the Special Olympics.
While discussing the Boks' win, Ramaphosa said that such an occasion deserved to be honoured, but didn't specify what that honour would be.
He then spoke about the state of the country, touching on load-shedding, railroad infrastructure, Covid-19, the police, and various other topics.
Many would be forgiven for thinking that he was purposefully avoiding the topic of a holiday, as he continued to update the country on various other topics, but not talking about what everyone was tuning in to hear.
He finally touched back on the issue of the holiday, saying that a holiday would be held after the matric exams were done so as to not distract those studying. He then declared that December 15 would officially be a public holiday.
