  • Mama Joy Chauke has been the most colourful supporter throughout the Rugby World Cup
  • Originally from the South African football scene, Mama Joy has become a symbol of national pride
  • South Africa's Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has released a statement dismissing the negativity

Sport is as much about those in the stands as it is the athletes on the field.

Attending prestigious international sporting events is a luxury afforded to few, but one superfan is getting the red-carpet treatment.

Mama Joy Chauke has been an ever-present at South African events this year, seemingly having become the unofficial national mascot.

Immediately recognisable in her traditional attire, she is always draped in the South African flag with a boldly branded scarf.

Chauke has been to the Women's Football World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the Netball World Cup in Cape Town and the Men's Football World Cup in Qatar, despite South Africa not qualifying.

The most recent stop on her jet-setting calendar has been the Rugby World Cup in France, much to the joy of some South Africans.

Not all the responses have been positive, however, with one example pointing out the cost of her accommodation, which TimesLive confirms is paid for by the Department of Sport, Art and Culture (DSAC).

Aware of the negativity, the DSAC released a statement, noting:

"Mama Joy and Botha’s presence at the Rugby World Cup is playing a major role in demonstrating how South Africa is using sport to heal from the divisions of the past.
"The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, as part of its international relations work and responsibility, is committed to creating global platforms for South Africans to promote people-to-people cooperation, collaboration, and partnership."

Not all were concerned with the logistics, preparing to let Mama Joy enjoy the influencer lifestyle.

The DSAC concluded:

"It should also be noted that in international relations, representation and participation is critical in positioning the country to protect its national interests and influence global agendas."

Mama Joy Chauke denied entry

Sports Brief recently reported on how the former Orlando Pirates fan was denied access to Orlando Stadium.

Chauke's love affair with the Buccaneers ended when she was recruited by Royal AM to be their new superfan.

Mama Joy had a ticket for the match but Orlando police officers denied her entry to the match until after halftime.
