Why did Michael Hooper take a break from rugby?

His shocking decision to leave the Wallabies squad just before their Rugby Championship tournament in Argentina in 2022 stunned the rugby world. Attempting to clear the air about why he was taking time away from the game, Hooper spoke to the press in October of that year.

“I’d been playing the game for a long time, had some great changes in my life happen this year, and I think there was a lot of things running through my head that sort of showed up in Argentina,” Hooper explained.

In an interview with Nine's Sports Sunday, Michael Hooper, Wallabies co-captain, announced his retirement from international competition. The 31-year-old was cut from Australia's squad for the 2023 World Cup in France despite having played for the Wallabies for 12 years and 125 Tests (with more than half of those appearances coming as captain).

Despite his achievements—becoming the first player to have 50 caps, the youngest player to play 100 Tests, and the longest-serving Wallabies captain—he is most cherished as a team mascot. He sacrificed 75% of his income to keep rugby alive during the pandemic and was never afraid to play the riskiest position on the field, so he was rarely hurt. Hooper declared,

“I love competing, I love being part of a team, I love representing,” he reflected after returning from a mental health break last year. “But it’s not a forever thing.”

Michael Hooper’s achievements

Michael has played for the Wallabies since 2012 and is widely regarded as one of the best openside flankers in the world. He can play multiple positions on the field thanks to his aggressive tackling and tireless work ethic. With the Waratahs, he has won two Super Rugby championships (in 2014 and 2018) and has been named the Australian Super Rugby Player of the Year twice.

Hooper was named the Wallabies' Rookie of the Year at the John Eales Medal Awards ceremony. Due to David Pocock's season-ending knee injury in 2013, he was awarded the John Eales Medal as the Wallabies' "Player of the Year" for his outstanding performance in all of Australia's Test matches.

The Wallabies star is projected to have a $5 million fortune in 2023. His income is mainly from Rugby, endorsement deals, and side ventures.

The openside flanker for the Waratahs is the highest-paid player in Australian rugby. Hooper agreed to a $6 million contract over five years in 2018. His annual compensation is $1.2 million.

Hooper makes significant money from endorsement deals and advertising campaigns. He represents such well-known Australian companies as Land Rover Australia and McLaren Vale Rosé as an ambassador.

Openside flanker Michael Hooper has played for the ACT Brumbies and the Toyota Verblitz in Japan and the NSW Waratahs. He has made more Wallaby appearances than any other captain in history and is currently ranked fourth on Australia's all-time list.
