FootballVarsity Cup: North West University Eagles Soar Above Wits University to End Their Season on a High With a Win
- The Varsity Cup season has come to an end with only the semi-finals and the finals left to be played
- North-West University Eagles ended their season on a high with a comprehensive win against Wits
- North-West University Eagles did not qualify for the final four, despite their dominant end to the season
The North-West University (NWU) Eagles ended their Varsity Cup season in style, beating Wits by 31 points to 3.
Wits started the game on the front foot, scoring a penalty in the fifth minute.
It sadly was the only points they would accumulate all game. However, the Eagles dominated the game after that, scoring five tries.
Captain Ruan Swiegers, also named man of the match, scored twice as he led his side to a comprehensive victory. However, Wits only had themselves to blame as they gave away 14 penalties during the game.
The Eagles didn’t waste those chances as they punished the Wits side. Tricky conditions underfoot also made the game more challenging. Heavy rains ensured that the game was played in muddy conditions, leaving the players battling for the ball while staying on their feet.
Despite the great end to their season, the Eagles could not secure a semi-final berth. The Eagles finished in fifth place, one point behind Tuks.
Shimlas, Ikeys, Maties and Tuks finished in the top four spots and will now contest the tournament's semi-finals. As defending champions, Tuks will be looking to go all the way and retain their title.
