  • Ghana's Abeiku Jackson took bronze in the men's 100m butterfly event
  • Egypt’s Nassr Abdalla and South Africa’s Jarden Easton took gold and silver
  • Abeiku clocked a slower time compared to the top two despite winning the final

Ghana's swimming captain in the ongoing 13th All-Africa Games, Abeiku Jackson, clinched his second medal after taking bronze in the men's 100m butterfly in swimming.

Jackson earned bronze despite coming first in the event, but there's an explanation for that.

The Ghanaian won the race and clocked 53.80 seconds. However, Egypt's Nasr Abdalla (53.29s) and Eaton Jarden (53.45s) took gold and silver, respectively.

The race was held on Monday, but it had to be redone on Tuesday, March 12, because two swimmers couldn't hear the starting bell due to noise in the venue.

According to My Joy Online, the athletes were given an option of keeping their time or taking part in a re-swim. Jackson chose to swim again.

Abdalla and Eaton kept their times, and the Ghanaian could not better their times. The bronze was Jackson's second medal in the competition. He took silver in the 50m butterfly.

Ghana have five medals, one gold, three silvers, and one bronze. The hosts are looking to improve their 2019 tally.

In the 12th edition, the West African nation finished 15th with two gold medals, two silver medals, and nine bronze medals, per 3 Sports.

All Africa Games medal table

Sports Brief earlier reported on the All Africa Games medal table, with Egypt at the top with an impressive tally of 84 medals, securing an additional 11 gold medals.

Nigeria has risen to a distant second place, overtaking South Africa, with a total of 16 gold medals as of Monday, with the Rainbow Nation now down to fourth place.

Kenyan athletes stage protest ahead of Games

Sports Brief also previously reported that Kenyan athletes declined to take part in the national trials for the ongoing 2023 Africa Games in Ghana, including 800m world champion, Mary Moraa.

The athletes were informed by the National Sports Council of Kenya that there would be only one qualification spot per category for all the disciplines, with that decision being angrily protested.
