Usually, when one high school wrestler loses to another wrestler, the gracious loser will show respect and acknowledge the victory with a handshake. Others throw a fit about it.

David Rientjes clearly falls into the latter category. This was following a wrestling match from the early 2000’s against Rosey Hernandez that recently went viral from Los Angeles, California.

After Rosey pinned David Rientjes in a freestyle wrestling match in California, the former was ready to graciously accept the victory with a handshake so that the wrestling dual between Belmont High School and James Monroe High School could continue.

However, David Rientjes decided to throw a fit about the loss in a moment of anger and rage. The referee was required to bring David back to the center of the mat to shake hands with the girl who had pinned him so quickly in front of David’s own school.

Rosey Hernandez quickly pinned David Rientjes in the first period of their wrestling match. Because girls pinning boys was exceptionally rare in this time period, the crowd celebrated the amazing achievement. David’s humiliation got the better of him and he decided to try to walk away from the match in disrespect to Rosey.

The video of the encounter surfaced recently and went viral on social media and around the globe. Many viewers and commenters have found David’s reaction amusing and have relished in the opportunity to share and remark on his convincing loss to a far superior girl wrestler.

How often have girls defeated boys in high school wrestling?

To compete in high school wrestling in the early 2000’s, girls had to compete on teams filled with boys because there were no girls-only teams like there are in many states today.

As a result, girls wrestled against boys in competition and sometimes won in dominant fashion. America Morris is the first known girl wrestler to pin a boy, Russell Cain, in competition in 1986. Much later, Michaela Hutchison defeated Aaron Boss to win a state wrestling championship in Alaska in 2006.

America Morris, Michaela Hutchison, and Rosey Hernandez have gone on to build successful careers and use the lessons they learned in wrestling to overcome adversity. Russell Cain, Aaron Boss, and David Rientjes continue to be known for their losses to these amazing girls.
