  • The NBA is filled with incredible young talent
  • With LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, young players are itching to take over
  • For that reason, Sports Brief looks at the top NBA players under 25 years old

The NBA is always looking for the next big star to take over from an ageing group of players whose dominance is coming to an end.

LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant are some of the stars that have dominated the league in the last decade, but they are nearing retirement, so there are several candidates to take the lead.

Players under 25 have not really hit their prime, but they've shown that they can become the face of the league when the older generation retires.

Some of these players have already received All-Star and All-NBA nods and are on the right track. Sports Brief ranks the top 10 under 25 NBA players.

Top 10 NBA players under 25

10. Victor Wembanyama (19) - San Antonio Spurs

The French phenom has played just 14 NBA games in his career and is living up to the expectations after he was selected first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. Like any other rookie, he will have ups and downs throughout the season, but he looks at home in his first NBA season. Only Anthony Davis and Brook Lopez average more blocks per game than the Frenchman.

2023/24 stats: 18.6 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 2.6 BPG

9. Zion Williamson (23)- New Orleans Pelicans

Williamson has had a difficult first few seasons in the NBA. Injuries have hampered his progress. He missed the entire 2021/22 season but has started well this campaign. He has played 11 games this season and has shown why fans shouldn't give up just yet

2023/24 stats: 22. PPG, 6.0 RPG, 4.5 APG

8. Cade Cunningham (22) - Detroit Pistons

Cunningham was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft but missed most of his sophomore year with a stress fracture in his left leg. This season, he has started well and is putting up better numbers than he did in his rookie season. It wouldn't be surprising to see him get an All-Star spot this season

2023/24 stats: 21.4 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 7.3 APG

7. Darius Garland (23)- Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavs have a future star in the making. He was brilliant last season, showing steady improvement in his numbers, and his backcourt partnership with All-Star Donovan Mitchell is bearing fruit. However, postseason performances will have to improve after an underwhelming performance in last season's first-round defeat to the New York Knicks.

2023/24 stats: 19.6 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 5.8 APG

6. Lamelo Ball (22)- Charlotte Hornets

Ball has silenced his doubters in the last few seasons, and it seems he's getting better. In his last five games this season, he has scored 36, 34, 37, 28 and 32 points. That is a man on a mission.

2023/24 stats: 25.3 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 8.3 APG

5. Tyrese Maxey (23)- Philadelphia 76ers

With James Harden gone, Maxey has been given the freedom to lead the Sixers' offence, and he is doing it so far. With MVP Joel Embiid doing his thing, Maxey is proving to be a good sidekick to the big man.

2023/24 stats: 26.8 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 7.1 APG

4. Ja Morant (24)- Memphis Grizzlies

Morant is already an All-Star, but his off-court behaviour has affected his standings among NBA fans. He was suspended for the first 25 games this season, and the Grillzies can't wait to have him back, per ESPN.

2022/23 stats: 26.2 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 8.1 APG

3. Tyrese Haliburton (23) - Indiana Pacers

The Pacers guard is probably one of the best in the NBA right now. He's already an All-Star and has turned out to be an elite playmaker. He leads the NBA in assists per game this season with 11.6.

2023/24 stats: 23.5 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 11.6 APG

2. Anthony Edwards (22)- Minnesota Timberwolves

Edwards remains one of the most exciting players in the NBA today. His numbers have improved every season in the Timberwolves' terrific start to the season n. They are top of the Western Conference standings with a 10-3 record. His three-point efficiency is also improving season by season, and the goal this season will be to lead the Timberwolves past the first round.

2023/24 stats: 25.8 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 5.1 APG

1. Luka Doncic (24) - Dallas Mavericks

There are no words left to describe Doncic. He's an All-Star and All-NBA player before reaching 25 years. He is a serious MVP candidate this season. In the first 14 games this season, only Embiid and Kevin Durant average more points per game than the Slovenian.

2023/24 stats: 30.6 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 8.1 APG

Honourable mentions: Jaren Jackson Jr, Evan Mobley, Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero, Scottie Barnes, Franz Wagner, Jalen Williams, Josh Giddey, Jalen Green, Walker Kessler, Jalen Duren, Tyler Herro, Keegan Murray.

Comparing LeBron and Wemby's NBA debuts

Sports Brief also recently compared LeBron and Wembanyama's NBA debuts. The French star was the most hyped draft prospect since LeBron James in 2003.

Wemby played limited minutes in his first game for the Spurs due to foul trouble.

He still ended with 15 points as San Antonio lost 126-119 to the Dallas Mavericks.
