In the last few years, the centre position has been considered obsolete, but some have shown that they are still a valuable piece on a championship team.

Last season, for instance, was dominated by two centers, Jokic and Embiid, who battled all season long for the MVP award, which Embiid narrowly won. Sports Brief looks at the top 5 centres in the NBA right now.

Top 5 NBA centers in for 2023/24

5. Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs

It seems unfair to place Wembanynma 5th on this list but no one can deny the impact he's made in his first few games. In seven NBA games so far this season, he's averaging 19.4 points, eight rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game. Only Anthony Davis averages more blocks (3.3) per game than the French phenom.

Therefore, the Spurs star deserves to be 5th, and although he will have ups and downs, he has proved that he belongs in the NBA.

4. Bam Adebayo, Miami Heat

Adebayo has quietly gone on with his business for the Heat in the last few seasons. He's received All-Star and NBA All-Defensive honors. In six games this season, he's averaging 21.5 points on 50.5% shooting from the field and 9.3 rebounds.

In his latest Heat game, he finished with 22 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists, becoming the first Heat player to drop a 20-20 triple-double, per Stat Muse. It's his 7th NBA season, and he's reaching his prime.

3. Anthony Davis, Los Angeles Lakers

Davis has had his critics in the last few seasons, who feel he hasn't lit up Crypto.com Arena since his blockbuster trade in 2019. Injuries have hindered his availability, but he's started well this season. He's averaging 23.9 points and 12.0 rebounds in seven games in 2023/24. No player has more blocks than the Lakers star.

LeBron James turns 39 in December, and Davis will be needed to step up this season both in the regular season and the playoffs.

2. Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers

The Cameroonian beat Nikola Jokic to win his first MVP award, and he's started strongly this season. He led the league in scoring for the second year running last season. In six games this season, Embiid has scored 24, 34, 35, 28, 26, and 48 points. That makes it 32.5 points per game on 53.5% shooting from the field. The 30-year-old is also averaging 11.0 rebounds per game.

1. Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets

There are no words left to describe Nikola Jokic. The Nuggets superstar has cemented his place in the NBA record books. After eight games, his numbers are impeccable, and it's clear to see why the Nuggets won the NBA title last season.

Comparing LeBron and Wemby's NBA debuts

Sports Brief recently compared Wembanyama's NBA debut to LeBron James' first game in the league, as the French phenom continues to impress.

Wembanyama played limited minutes in his first NBA start due to foul trouble but still finished with 15 points in the loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

James had a much better showing on his debut, recording 25 points, nine assists, six rebounds, and four steals against the Sacramento Kings.
