  • The 2023/24 NBA season is up and running
  • The NBA All-Star Game was a major talking point before the season started
  • Sports Brief looks at some players who could make their first All-Star game

The NBA season got underway last week, and it's been entertaining so far. Stephen Curry has been impressive, Luka Doncic continued where he left off, LeBron James looks great at 38, and Victor Wembanyama is showing promising signs.

We've also had a blockbuster trade less than two weeks after the 2023/24 season started. Teams are also getting ready for the inaugural in-season tournament, which is scheduled for November 3 to December 9.

After that, fans and players will focus on the 2023/24 All-Star game, and there are a few players poised to make their first appearance. The NBA All-Star Game of 2024 will take place in Indianapolis.

Last season, some players were snubbed, while others were controversially selected. This season presents a chance for several players to prove the doubters wrong.

So, which players are expected to get their first-time All-Star in 2024? Sports Brief looks at the top 5 most likely.

5. Victor Wembanyama - San Antonio Spurs

When you're the most hyped draft prospect in 20 years, expectations will always be sky-high. In his first three NBA games, Wemby has been decent. He has scored 15, 21, and 11 points.

The 7-foot-4 Frenchman has been blocking shots, dunking, sinking 3s, and doing guard moves in the first few games. Spurs are 1-2, and the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft could become the next rookie to make the All-Star game.

4. Mikal Bridges - Brooklyn Nets

Bridges is Mr. Reliable. He has never missed an NBA game and is spearheading the post-Kevin Durant Brooklyn Nets after he joined last season from the Phoenix Suns. In 27 games after the trade, he averaged 26.1 points on 47.5/37.6/89.4 shooting. His elite defence makes him one of the best two-way players in the league.

He is Brooklyn's best player and has been tipped to make the All-Star team this season if he continues with his good start. He is averaging 23.5 points and 20.7 points after facing the Charlotte Hornets and Dallas Mavericks.

3. Paolo Banchero - Orlando Magic

The reigning Rookie of the Year averaged 19.6 points per game last season and is putting up 11.7 this season so far. He'll need to step up since the competition in the frontcourt in the Eastern Conference is stiff. The Magic are 2-1 this season, and if they continue winning, it will be hard to snub Banchero.

2. Jalen Brunson - New York Knicks

NBA fans were livid when Brunson was snubbed in last season's All-Star game. He averaged a career-best 24 points per game, 6.2 assists per game, and shot a career-best 41.6% from deep in 2022-23. He plays in the league's largest media market, and if he improves his numbers, he will make the All-Star game, no doubt.

1. Jamal Murray - Denver Nuggets

It is insane to think that Murray has never made the All-Star game despite his heroics in the Denver Nuggets' NBA title triumph last season. He averaged 26.1 points in the postseason and 20 in the regular season. Murray has a good chance of making his first All-Star game, but he will face serious competition for a starter spot from Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic. He is widely expected to be selected for his first NBA All-Star game.

Honourable mentions: Aaron Gordon, Tyrese Maxey, Evan Mobley, Anthony Edwards, Desmond Bane.

Comparing LeBron and Wemby's NBA debuts

Sports Brief recently compared Wembanyama's NBA debut to LeBron James' first game in the league, as the French phenom continues to impress.

Wembanyama played limited minutes in his first NBA start due to foul trouble, but still finished with 15 points in the loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

James had a much better showing on his debut, recording 25 points, nine assists, six rebounds, and four steals against the Sacramento Kings.
