Germany produced one of the biggest upsets in recent times by knocking out the USA from the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The Germans won 113-111 in the semi-final to eliminate the Americans and progress to the final. They will face Serbia in the final, while Team USA will face Canada for the bronze.

Andreas Obst finished the game with 24 points and six assists, Franz Wagner had 22 points, Daniel Theis 21, and Dennis Schroder had 17 points and nine assists.

Anthony Edwards' 23 points were not enough for a USA comeback. Austin Reaves scored 21, Mikal Bridges had 17, and Jalen Brunson had 15.

Germany are the only unbeaten team in the tournament and will look to finish the job on Sunday against Serbia. The Serbians defeated the Canadians in the other semi-final, 95-86.

The USA will now have to wait for their record-breaking 6th title. They last won the title in 2014. Germany will be looking to win their first-ever FIBA Basketball World Cup title.

How did Germany beat USA?

The Germans were dominant throughout the game, and although the USA threatened to erase any lead they built, their defence stood strong to steal a historic win.

Obst hit a dagger three-pointer with 1:15 left to put Germany up by four and kill any chance by the USA to mount a comeback. Schroder then sank a pull-up jumper to stretch the lead to 113-107. The Europeans led for 30 of the game's 40 minutes, per NBA.

Steve Kerr's team nearly erased a 10-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter, but they fell short, allowing Germany to book their first-ever trip to the final.

Most FIBA World Cup wins

Sports Brief earlier reported on the most FIBA Basketball World Cup wins.

Team USA is tied with the former Yugoslavia for the most FIBA World Cup titles in the history of the tournament. The Americans won the championship in 1954, 1986, 1994, 2010, and 2014. Yugoslavia won it in 1970, 1978, 1990, 1998, and 2002.

The Soviet Union won three titles.
