NBAAnthony Davis Agrees Three Year $186 Million Extension With Lakers
- The Los Angeles Lakers and Anthony Davis have agreed on a three-year $186 million extension
- Davis arrived in Los Angeles in 2019 and helped the Lakers win the 2020 title
- The 30-year-old was set to be a free agent in 2025
Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Lakers have agreed on a three-year $186 million extension that will take the 30-year-old through to 2028. The big man had two years and $84 million left on his contract.
Davis arrived in Los Angeles in 2019, but injuries have prevented him from truly dominating. He still played a key role for the Lakers in their 2020 NBA championship run.
In 56 regular season games last season in the NBA, Davis averaged 25.9 points, 12.5 points, and two blocks per game while shooting 56.3 percent from the field. The eight-time All-Star has struggled to stay on the floor after the Lakers won the title.
After missing a month with an injury last season, Davis returned to help the struggling Lakers. After LeBron James was injured, he rose to the occasion to help the Lakers seal a play-in spot on their way to the Western Conference finals.
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, his deal through 2028 will be worth $270 million plus.
Davis to be Lakers face
With James turning 39 in December, it is likely he could retire or leave for another team before Davis' contract runs out in 2028. Therefore, the big man could be the new face of the franchise, per the Athletic.
Davis is also just hitting his prime, and the Lakers' championship ambitions will depend on his health. He has proven he can be the top man when the teams need him.
The investment is a risk, but considering how he performed in the 2023 postseason, it seems like the correct decision. The Lakers surely wouldn't want Davis to walk for free in 2025.

NBALeBron to play in 21st season
Sports Brief earlier reported on James confirming he will play in his 21st NBA season months after he hinted at retirement.
At the ESPYS in Los Angeles, he won the award for Best Record-Breaking Performance for passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. While giving his speech, he shut down the retirement rumors.
"I don't care how many more points I score, or what I can or cannot do on the floor," James said. "The real question for me is: Can I play without cheating this game? The day I can't give everything on the floor is the day I'll be done. Lucky for you guys, that day is not today."
